Education is one of the most proactive and pragmatic approaches to preventing child abuse. Abbott House is committed to empowering communities to better serve victims of child abuse and to prevent the further victimization of children. ChildhelpUSA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to meet the needs of abuse, neglected and at-risk children. They focus their efforts on advocacy, prevention, treatment, and community outreach. Childhelp is home to the National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-4-A-CHILD). The hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with professional crisis counselors who offer crisis intervention, information, literature and referrals. www.childhelp.org
Darkness to Light
Darkness to Light is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of child sexual abuse through public awareness and education. They are most renowned for their interactive training program for adults called Stewards of Children, available online through their web-based version or facilitated live by one of their over 3,500 facilitators who teach the program in 49 states and 15 additional countries. More than 300,000 copies of the curriculum have been distributed. www.d2l.org
In 1979, Child Abuse Prevention became the National Project of the country's oldest American service organization, the Exchange Club. The Exchange Club's national foundation was created to help local clubs develop and maintain community-based child abuse prevention programs with an emphasis on youth-serving programs, Americanism and community service. One With Courage is an initiative of the National Children's Alliance centered around the courage it takes to talk about child sexual abuse and the unique role children's advocacy centers play in providing comprehensive, coordinated and compassionate services to child victims of abuse. Stop it Now! is an organization that prevents the sexual abuse of children by providing support, information and resources to keep children safe and create healthier communities.
